For the past three years I have been working full time as an independent ecologist and protected species consultant; undertaking ecological surveys on a wide range of habitats including farm surveys, vantage point surveys and protected species survey work. I have extensive experience in both bird and bat survey methodologies.
Birds
Ecological Monitoring, Environmental Impact Assessment and Surveying Experience
I have been involved in numerous environmental monitoring and surveying activities, including:
Vantage Point Surveys. I have worked on a number of environmental impact assessment projects that have required detailed flight line observations to be carried out both during the breeding season and in the winter season. I am an experienced user of MapInfo, and am able to produced detailed mapping of target species.
Cowie Seabird Surveys. I have been involved in carrying out seabird surveys in both the North Sea and Irish Sea. I am qualified to work offshore, with safety at sea, VHF radio and a range of boat handling certificates.
Lincolnshire Bird Club. I am presently chairman of the Lincolnshire Bird Club.
General Ornithological Survey Work. I am involved in wildlife survey work, including work for the British Trust for Ornithology, RSPB and local Wildlife Trusts. I have been involved in the production of 3 County Bird Atlases, being involved in both the survey work and the final publication of 3 published titles.
For the past 10 years I have participated in the RSPB Farmer Alliance project, which involves working closely with farmers to produce detailed surveys of local farmland. At the end of each survey, detailed maps are produced and presented to the farmer to aid conservation activities on the participating farmland.
I have held a British Trust for Ornithology ringing license for over 20 years and have experience of ringing a wide range of British species, including large numbers of barn owls, little owls and numerous birds of prey.
Bats.
I hold a Natural England bat roost visitors licence. I am a member of the Bat Conservation Trust and the Lincolnshire Bat Group. I have extensive experience in bat survey methodologies, including emergence, transect and roost surveys as well as undertaking volunteer bat warden inspections on behalf of Natural England. I have expert knowledge of using Pettersson time-expansion and Anabat bat detectors, and have developed specialist knowledge of using software for the sound analysis of bat recordings.
Other wildlife
In addition I have a working knowledge of UK mammals, herptiles, diurnal Lepidoptera, Odonata and orchids.
